The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is a unique canid native to East Asia, named for its superficial resemblance to a raccoon due to its facial markings and dense fur. Unlike most canids, it has short legs, a rounded body, and a bushy tail, and it does not bark—instead, it whines or growls. Raccoon dogs are omnivorous, feeding on insects, small animals, fruit, and carrion. They are monogamous and often den together in pairs. Known for their adaptability, they can hibernate or become dormant in colder regions. Introduced to parts of Europe, they have established populations outside their native range.
