The short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis) is a rare and little-known canid native to the dense rainforests of the Amazon Basin in South America. It has a unique appearance among wild dogs, with a slender body, short rounded ears, long legs, and a dark, often bluish-gray or reddish-brown coat. Primarily solitary and elusive, the short-eared dog is rarely seen and is one of the least studied wild canids. It is omnivorous, feeding on small mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, and fruit. Adapted to humid, forested environments, it is threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and is considered near-threatened.
