The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a medium-sized hyena species found across North and East Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. It has a coarse grayish or sandy coat marked with vertical black stripes on its body and legs, a bushy mane along its back, and a thick, dark-tipped tail. Typically solitary or found in pairs, the striped hyena is primarily nocturnal and shy, avoiding human activity. It is mainly a scavenger, feeding on carrion, bones, and refuse, but it will also hunt small animals and eat fruit. Though less aggressive than the spotted hyena, it is vital to its ecosystem as a cleaner. It is currently listed as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and persecution.
