The African-Asian wildcat (Felis lybica), also known as the African wildcat, is a small, slender feline native to Africa and parts of the Middle East and Central Asia. It has a sandy-gray to light brown coat with faint stripes, a white underbelly, and a bushy tail with dark rings and a black tip. This species is believed to be the ancestor of the domestic cat (Felis catus). Typically solitary and nocturnal, it hunts small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Highly adaptable, it thrives in deserts, savannas, and scrublands. Hybridization with domestic cats is a growing threat to its genetic purity.
