The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is a medium-sized wild cat native to North America, found in a wide range of habitats from forests and deserts to swamps and suburban areas. It has a muscular body, short “bobbed” tail with a black tip, tufted ears, and a spotted reddish-brown to grayish coat that provides excellent camouflage. Smaller than the lynx but similar in appearance, the bobcat is solitary and primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, preying on rabbits, rodents, birds, and deer fawns. Highly adaptable and elusive, the bobcat is the most widespread wild cat in North America and is currently listed as Least Concern.
