The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the fastest land animal on Earth, capable of reaching speeds up to 70 mph (113 km/h) in short bursts. Native to parts of Africa and Iran, it has a slender, aerodynamic build, long legs, a small head, and distinctive black “tear marks” running from its eyes down to its mouth. Its golden coat is covered in solid black spots, providing camouflage in grasslands and open savannas. Unlike other big cats, the cheetah has semi-retractable claws for better grip while running. It hunts primarily by sight during the day, preying on antelope and small game. Cheetahs are vulnerable due to habitat loss, low genetic diversity, and human conflict.
