The chilla (Lycalopex griseus), also known as the South American gray fox or Patagonian fox, is a small canid native to southern South America, including Chile and Argentina. It has a grayish coat with reddish flanks, a bushy tail tipped in black, and large ears. Adaptable and omnivorous, the chilla feeds on rodents, birds, insects, and fruit, and can live in a variety of habitats, from forests to grasslands. Typically solitary or seen in pairs, it is more active at night and twilight. Though not a true fox, it plays a similar ecological role in South American ecosystems.
