The culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus), also known as the Andean fox or Andean wolf, is the second-largest canid in South America, found across the Andes and surrounding regions. It has a thick reddish-gray coat, a bushy tail, and a robust build, resembling a small wolf. The culpeo is an adaptable omnivore, feeding on rodents, rabbits, birds, carrion, and fruit. It typically hunts alone but may pair during breeding season. Though it plays a vital role in controlling pest populations, it is sometimes persecuted by farmers for preying on livestock. Despite this, it remains widespread and is not currently considered endangered.
