The eastern timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon), also known as the eastern wolf, is a subspecies of gray wolf native to the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, particularly around the Great Lakes and parts of Ontario and Quebec. It has a lean build, long legs, and a coat that ranges from gray to reddish-brown. Smaller than the gray wolf but larger than the coyote, it may have hybrid ancestry with both species. Eastern timber wolves are social animals that live and hunt in packs, preying on deer and small mammals. They are currently listed as threatened due to habitat loss and human conflict.
