The Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis) is Africa’s most endangered carnivore and the world’s rarest wolf species, found only in the high-altitude plateaus of Ethiopia. With its slender build, long legs, and striking reddish coat with white markings, it resembles a fox but is more closely related to gray wolves. This highly specialized predator primarily hunts rodents in alpine meadows and grasslands. Ethiopian wolves live in tight-knit family packs but hunt alone. Their survival is threatened by habitat loss, disease from domestic dogs, and human encroachment, making conservation efforts critical to their future.
