The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat found in wetlands, mangroves, and riverine forests of South and Southeast Asia. It has a stocky build, short legs, and a coarse grayish coat marked with dark spots and stripes. Well-adapted to aquatic environments, the fishing cat has partially webbed feet and is an excellent swimmer, often diving to catch fish, its primary prey. It also hunts amphibians, crustaceans, and small mammals. Primarily nocturnal and solitary, it relies on dense vegetation near water sources. Due to habitat loss, especially the destruction of wetlands, the fishing cat is classified as vulnerable.
