The Formosan ferret-badger (Melogale subaurantiaca) is a small, nocturnal carnivore endemic to Taiwan. It has a slender body, short legs, and distinctive facial markings, including a white stripe down the snout and pale patches on the face. Its dark brown fur and bushy tail help it blend into forested environments. This elusive species feeds on insects, small animals, fruit, and carrion. Once considered a subspecies of the Chinese ferret-badger, it is now recognized as a separate species. Though poorly studied, it is threatened by habitat loss, and some populations have been affected by disease outbreaks, including rabies.
