The Himalayan wolf (Canis lupus chanco) is a rare and genetically distinct subspecies of gray wolf found in the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, particularly in Nepal, India, and Tibet. Adapted to cold, rugged environments, it has a thick, pale coat and a more compact build compared to lowland wolves. These wolves are elusive and typically live in small packs, preying on mountain ungulates and scavenging when necessary. Genetic studies suggest the Himalayan wolf may represent one of the most ancient wolf lineages, making its conservation especially important in the face of habitat encroachment and climate change.
