The Japanese marten (Martes melampus) is a small, agile carnivore native to Japan, found on the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It has a slender body, a bushy tail, and soft fur that ranges in color from pale yellow to dark brown, often with an orange or cream-colored throat patch. Primarily nocturnal but sometimes active during the day, the Japanese marten is an excellent climber, often hunting in trees. It feeds on small mammals, birds, insects, fruits, and occasionally carrion. Adaptable to forests and rural areas, it is classified as Least Concern, though some local populations are threatened by habitat loss and competition with invasive species.
