The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the tallest wild canid in South America, easily recognized by its long legs, reddish-golden coat, black mane, and large ears. Native to the grasslands and savannas of Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Argentina, it resembles a fox on stilts but is not closely related to true wolves or foxes. Despite its size, the maned wolf is a solitary and shy animal, primarily active at night. It is an omnivore with a diverse diet that includes small mammals, birds, insects, and fruit—especially the wolf apple, a key food source. It is currently classified as near-threatened due to habitat loss.
