The margay (Leopardus wiedii) is a small, nocturnal wild cat native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Often mistaken for the ocelot due to its beautifully spotted and striped coat, the margay is smaller, more slender, and uniquely adapted for life in the trees. It has large eyes for night vision, an exceptionally long tail for balance, and flexible ankles that allow it to climb down trees headfirst—one of the few cats with this ability. Margays primarily hunt birds, small mammals, and reptiles in the canopy. Though elusive and arboreal, they are threatened by deforestation and the illegal pet trade and are classified as Near Threatened.
