The Pampas cat (Leopardus colocola) is a small, elusive wild feline native to the grasslands, shrublands, and forests of South America, ranging from Argentina and Chile to Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador. It has a stocky build and a coat that varies greatly in color and pattern—ranging from grayish or reddish with stripes and spots to almost solid-colored—depending on its region. Its tail is thick and bushy, often banded with dark rings. The Pampas cat is solitary and mostly nocturnal, feeding on small mammals, birds, and reptiles. Though not well-studied, it is believed to be declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation and is currently listed as Near Threatened.
