The red wolf (Canis rufus) is a critically endangered canid native to the southeastern United States. Intermediate in size between the gray wolf and the coyote, it has a slender build, long legs, and a reddish-tan coat with black markings on the back and tail. Red wolves are highly social, living in small family packs and preying on deer, rabbits, and small mammals. Once declared extinct in the wild, they were reintroduced through captive breeding programs, primarily in North Carolina. Despite conservation efforts, red wolves face ongoing threats from habitat loss, vehicle collisions, and hybridization with coyotes.
