The sand cat (Felis margarita) is a small, desert-dwelling wild cat perfectly adapted to the harsh, arid environments of North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. It has a compact build, sandy-colored fur for camouflage, and large ears set low on its head to detect prey underground. Thick fur on its feet protects it from hot sand and leaves minimal tracks. Primarily nocturnal, the sand cat is a solitary hunter that preys on rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects. It survives without free-standing water, getting moisture from its prey. Elusive and rarely seen, it is well-suited to life in some of the world’s toughest deserts.
