The side-striped jackal (Canis adustus) is a medium-sized canid native to central and southern Africa’s woodlands and savannas. It has a grizzled gray-brown coat with distinctive white stripes running along its sides, a bushy tail tipped in black, and shorter ears than other jackals. More shy and less aggressive than its cousins, the side-striped jackal is primarily nocturnal and omnivorous, feeding on small animals, fruit, carrion, and insects. It typically lives in monogamous pairs and is known for its adaptability, thriving in both wild and semi-urban areas.
