The tayra (Eira barbara) is a large, slender member of the weasel family native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. It has a long body, short limbs, a bushy tail, and a sleek dark brown to black coat with a lighter patch on the throat or chest—sometimes yellowish or cream-colored. Tayras are highly agile and omnivorous, feeding on fruit, insects, small mammals, birds, and reptiles. They are active during the day (diurnal) and often travel long distances in search of food. Intelligent and curious, tayras are classified as Least Concern, though deforestation threatens their habitat in some areas.
